You may be a good plumber, even an excellent one, but does that mean you know how to run a business? The answer to that question may or may not necessarily be true, because it takes skill to know how to run a business-any business-including the plumbing business.
Plumbing is a noble professional. It requires unique skills that few possess, so one has to know their craft and know it well. But running a plumbing business? Well, that can require even greater skill than one may imagine.
Some plumbers are independent contractors, meaning they work for themselves and they have their own individual clients. Some work together in a business setting, meaning that they work together as a network or as a team to get the job done-and done right.
But in order to do that, a plumbing business needs to knows all the rules of business, all the ‘rules of the game’, as it were, on how to run a business and to maintain it for years or decades to come. They need to know business ethics, for example, what is legal and illegal, what is ethical or unethical, in addition to having an excellent rapport with their clients.
They also need good harmony and structure. Like a sport team, they have to be able to work in harmony with each other, not against one another. When one brother-or sister-plumber is in trouble or is dealing with a tough, overwhelming job, one has to be able to come to each other’s aid. In a sense, a plumbing business is like a family, they learn to look out for one another.
Does a plumbing business need to know tax laws? Absolutely. They need to know what forms to fill out and what business taxes to buy that applies to businesses-large or small.
And you thought it was easy to run a plumbing business. Well, for some it can be-especially if they have a good business mind and a natural flair for organization and efficiency. Perhaps that may be true of you; if it is, then you are indeed ready to start your own plumbing business.
But if not, there’s still opportunity to learn. You can do that by talking to skilled plumbers who have successfully maintained businesses for decades; they can give a few pointers on what you can do to start and maintain your own business.
And one day-when you’ve had your own successful, thriving plumbing business for years-you can pass on to future plumbers what was passed on to you.
