How To Run A Successful Business

Learning how to run a successful business is absolutely mandatory if you want to ever succeed in any business.  There are many ways to make your business successful.  In most cases you have a few major points that you have to follow if you want to succeed.  You need clients, you need to bill those clients in a timely manner with a fair and not a low ball price and give them impeccable service, and you need to be smart with the money you get from those clients.

How to Run A Successful Business Step 1

The first thing you need to do to run a successful business is to have a steady stream of clients.  It does not really matter where you get these clients from but the cheaper your advertising the cheaper the cheaper the client.  In the beginning stages you do what you need to for building the business and getting money for better marketing.

I found that when I did any advertising with any of the online classifieds I was getting people that were really cheap.  I had to cut my prices down quite a bit to get any work at all.  This is not the best way to build a business, and unless you have no money for starting out I would suggest you do other methods.  This was true for newspapers as well.  The cheaper the newspaper the cheaper the client.  Not my way of doing business but if this is what you have to do when starting out then do this.  Just make sure to save your hard earned cash for better marketing in the future.

How to Run A Successful Business Step 2

Make sure you charge your clients as soon as possible.  I always tried to get cash in my hands before leaving the clients house.  That way there was no way I would forget about billing them in the future.  Before you bill your client though you had better have given them better service than they would have gotten from any other business.  And if they believe you give the best service then this will help with you long term marketing through word of mouth.  If you are new and charging a little lower than the industry then you need to explain to the customer while you are billing them that this is not your regular price, and even though you love referrals please do not tell anyone how low I was.  The reason you need to explain this is you are better off getting one referral at regular price than 2 at a discount.  You might not think this makes sense if you are the business, but once you have others in the business you will have wished you were charging full price sooner.  If you are charging industry standard or above do not use this.

How To Run A Successful Business Step 3

Money management is a very important part of running a successful business.  If you blow everything you make on your own wants and needs and starve your business then at some point when things slow down your company will have to close the doors.  Take the money you make, put it back into the company, work longer hours, learn more, be smarter, hire, train, hire, and build more and above all else set goals.  If you set a goal of gross sales of $100,000 at the end of your first year and achieve that goal then give yourself and your family a small reward.  I am assuming that if your goal of $100,000 is a worthy goal.  In fact I will set your first goal for you.  Most service businesses should be able to do in their first year 3 to 4 times what an employee in that industry makes.  For instance in the plumbing industry where I am from a plumber makes close to $70K per year.  Therefore a goal of $210,000 to $280,000 for the first year is a great goal.  Material and expenses will take 50-70% of that, leaving you with between $63K and $140K.  Yes, you might make less in your first year on your own than working for someone else. That is ok though as you are learning what works for building your company.  The long term benefits of working for yourself and running a successful business far out way the benefits of working for others.  Don’t let your employees read this article, lol.
